to boycott items made in sweat shops, then it seems that things would improve in the world. If consumers say nothing, then the practices will continue. First, what are the
conditions that prompt such concerns? Governments of developing countries have forced people to accept poor conditions because they are in competition with developing countries in order to attract investment
(Hutchings, 1996). The countries of Asia which are the least developed such as Vietnam and South China are the most dismal sites for this type of exploitation (Hutchings, 1996).
They aspire to follow the successes of neighbors and MNCs will continue to impose such conditions (Hutchings, 1996). This is true as long as governments comply and governments,
as well as MNCs, do prey on the young and uneducated workers (Hutchings, 1996). These workers are more likely to agree to low wages as well as minimal representation
(Hutchings, 1996). They are usually not aware of their rights (Hutchings, 1996). Female workers are more susceptible to patriarchal orders as well (Hutchings, 1996). Protective legislation is not
usually a practical recourse because it is not usually enforced (Hutchings, 1996). At the same time, people are discouraged from speaking out by fellow workers and fear blacklisting (Hutchings, 1996).
Korean factory workers were even harassed and physically abused by fellow employees who would demand improved working conditions and representation (Francis, 1995 as cited in Hutchings, 1996). Workers,
