As the organizations website notes, "The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice" (The American College of Surgeons, 2006). The following paper examines this organization. The American College of Surgeons As mentioned, this organization got its start back in 1913 (The American College of Surgeons, 2006). And their function was clearly implemented in order to improve care for the patient through establishing very high standards concerning practice and education on the part of the surgeons. The organization indicates that it is involved in many different levels within the health care industry of the nation. For example, they sponsor a large number "of continuing medical education programs, such as the Clinical Congress and Spring Meeting, to help surgeons keep abreast of the latest information on surgical subjects" (The American College of Surgeons, 2006). They are involved with programs, conducting those programs, concerning the Commission on Cancer in order to improve the care given to cancer patients, as well as encouraging hospitals to create such programs (The American College of Surgeons, 2006). There is the Committee on Trauma which "works to improve the care of injured and critically ill patients--before, en route to, and during hospitalization" (The American College of Surgeons, 2006).
