who create a comic book in the dreadful days before World War II. The book won the Pulitzer Prize, deservedly so; it is a strange mix of comedy, adolescent idiocy
and tragic loss. This paper discusses how anger fuels Joes creativity; how it alienates him from those around him; and yet how it parallels changes in his art. It also
discusses ways in which Joes violence nearly destroys him, and how it can be seen as ignorance. Joe and Sam Before we can discuss him, we should know who he
is. Josef (Joe) Kavalier is a Jewish refugee from Prague who arrives in Brooklyn one night and meets his cousin Sam. Joe had been studying magic while his cousin Sam
drew comics. They combined their peculiar talents to launch a comic character, the Escapist, who takes potshots at the developing Third Reich. Thus, what Chabon has done is to re-imagine
history through the distorting fantasy world of comic books. The character of the Escapist is free to do all the things Joe would like to do but cannot. And perhaps
the thing Joe would like to do most of all is somehow defeat Adolf Hitler. Because he obviously cant do such a thing in reality, he uses his alter ego,
the Escapist, to accomplish the mission. In a madcap adventure, the Escapist flies to Europe, gets captured, withstands interrogation, and then "dukes it out" with both the Wehrmacht and the
Luftwaffe, finally ending by capturing Hitler and forcing him to stand trial before the entire world (Chabon, 2000). Hitler is sentenced to death and the Escapist gets the credit for
