of the most famous playwrights of the time, and a man who had William Shakespeare as an actor in his work, was Ben Jonson. The following paper examines and discusses
his play The Alchemist. The Alchemist by Ben Jonson Setting: The setting of this play takes place in London. The setting within London is the home of the
master, Lovewit, who is away in the country because he fears another outbreak of the Plague. This leaves the setting to the other characters, and then ultimately to the character
of Lovewit as well for he does return in the end. Characters: There are numerous characters within this long play and many of the characters are individuals who are
essentially put there for the amusement of the main character(s). Aside from Lovewit, who will return later in the play, there is his servant Face, a man he knows named
Subtle-who is the Alchemist-, and a prostitute named Dol. Other characters who come into the play, only to be ultimately used by Face and his buddies, are Dapper (a Lawyers
clerk), Drugger (a tobacco man), Pertinax (a gamester), Tribulation Wholesome (a Pastor), Ananias (a deacon), Kastril ("the angry Boy"), and Dame Pliant (Jonson, 1610). Plot development: The story begins,
as noted, when Lovewit leaves Face alone with the house while he retreats to the country to avoid the Plague. Face decides that this would be a perfect opportunity for
him to make some money, and also make fun of other people, belittling them and using their weaknesses against them. He enlists the help of Subtle and Dol and begins
