in understanding how certain people reach the age of 80, 90, 100 or more with a body that has not suffered any significant disease. The extent to which exceptional
survivor octogenarians and supercentenarians represent a small but vital population in relation to understanding the genetic composition of healthy aging and longevity speaks to the increased attention the scientific community
is paying in the form of supportable research. This article discusses the heretofore unverifiable claims of people allegedly living well past one hundred years of age, noting how past research
tactics left more than a little to be desired. Todays approach to identifying and authenticating such persons has taken a significant step forward by studying various physiological aspects of
the individual both prior to and after death. One cited example is that of an autopsy performed on a centenarian woman from Okinawa whose body was found to be
in remarkably good shape for performing its functions over the course of one century. Also indicative of the womans longevity was a lack of any cancer, stroke or coronary
artery disease, as well as "little evidence for major damage in several organ systems" (Willcox et al, 2008, p. 1182). However, the womans body did display considerable deterioration lungs
and spine along with experiencing silicosis. Contributions/recommendations made regarding the findings include how scientific data would be so much more complete if there
was a way to study people throughout their life spans as opposed to after death to determine genetic and environmental aspects that serve to enhance an individuals ability to age
long and healthfully. This concept, however, is virtually impossible to carry out due to the extreme length of time a study like this would require. Statements supporting knowledge
