the prologue. Bede highlights the fact that the information about Cuthbert is relevant. It is hard to know exactly what the motivations behind this man were. It seems that he
was devoted to God, but he was also always interest in the common man. In some way, while he did devote his life to God, Cuthbert was also selfish in
some way. At least, he took time to himself in addition to serving others. The accuracy of the account is questionable but the writing appears to be sincere. Bede points
out the fact that this individual would go away to help the ordinary people. In some way, this individual was extraordinary in his devotion to God, but was interested in
helping the average individual. The lesson in this text is perhaps that one can in fact serve God and his neighbor. II. Bede: Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth
and Jarrow Here, the focus is on a number of individuals instead of one as is generally the case for the other chapters. It seems that Bede writes more
formally and less from the heart in this piece. The writing is divided here by short chapters within the section. How the people lived varied but the author is specific
in providing the details: "For just as those who beget children by carnal generation must be governed by earthly and carnal considerations in their choice of an heir for an
earthly and carnal inheritance" (Bede, 1998, p.199). This is simply one example to denote the type of language and information relayed. The motives of the individuals would vary, but there
