seems that the prestige of Frances culture and language would flourish during the time period (2002). While that is the case, and France did thrive, it did so at the
expense of personal liberty. The elite enjoyed the reign and endorsed the policies of Louis XIV but many suffered under his leadership. Eventually, things would mushroom and decades later, the
infamous French Revolution would come about. Essentially, at the time, the people were ruled by a monarch who was power hungry. Louis XIV was not concerned with the will
of the people, or even with what was truly best for them. Rather, he was wrapped up in the concept of power. That is what he wanted and that is
what he would ultimately get. At the same time, Louis XIV was not a bad leader and did accomplish some rather positive goals. Still, he was an absolutist and was
clearly the sole leader of France during the time period. His actual power is questionable as some have speculated that he might have lost it if he did not cater
to the "well to do." Perhaps they were the ones with the real power. At the same time, that thesis has never been proven. The idea that Louis XIV was
a lone powerful leader is accepted. Spielvogel (1991) explains that absolutism refers to the idea that the ultimate authority rests in the hands of the state or a
