Indeed, one of the most critical aspects of this particular era was the fact that political reforms were designed as a means by which to place more power into hands of the common man; however, these designs were not without counter movements that attempted to impede such progress. Religion, too, played an integral role in the overall establishment of social shaping and reformation, as did the changing role of family and women's traditional place within the social structure. One of the most encompassing issues that existed during this timeframe was that of democracy -- in actuality, the debate the raged between the North and the South with regard to the notions true precept and how it impacted the common man. The idea of democracy, as the countrys forefathers originally intended it to represent, was that of the ultimate evolution of human life. This concept, which was just a seed when it was initially conceived, allowed for people to make their own destinies -- to follow whatever dreams they may have kept harbored deep inside for fear they would never be able to make them a reality.
