African art and culture, the mask is meaningful and used for important ceremonies. If one is a mask maker, one would be privy to the reasons for making that mask.
The mask would have meaning to the mask maker and his people. This is important and also an accurate observation in spite of the fact that masks today are
used symbolically in other ways. In other words, the meaning of the mask to the mask maker may be very different than what some construe as meaningful today. A passage
which appears in The Nation reads as follows: "The dinner table is the locus of ceremony and symbol, in France.... She could not stand in greater contrast with the Demoiselles,
who occupy the other extreme of female identity in that era, since they are prostitutes transformed by Picasso into embodiments of primal appetite, for which the use of African masks
must be a metaphor" ("Art," 1994, 422). Today, African masks are used as decoration, as party fare and as symbolic gestures, but the masks were meaningful to the people
at the time, and that is something that should not be overlooked. To embrace the African mask as something just decorative or reminiscent of African culture as a whole is
to miss the point of the masks intent. There are a variety of masks and they are meaningful. Of course, not all masks are the same. It is important
to remember that Africa is a large continent. A satellite picture is available on the Internet ("Africa Satellite," 2004). Yet, many maps of Africa are readily available and may be
