solid and influential part of the countryside, and the Industrial Revolution, with the Civil War behind it, could really move forward in technological advances. Socially speaking it was also a
time of great change. As the African Americans began to experience freedom, the rest of society seemed to move forward and almost forget the issues of slavery or at least
forget that the former slaves perhaps needed some attention socially and economically speaking. This is not to say that some pockets of the country did not take the African Americans
in and give them opportunities and such. But, it is to say that the majority of the society simply moved ahead, leaving the African American to essentially fend for themselves.
The African American experience in the Gilded Age was one of great diversity. And, with the existence of the Victorian culture the African American experienced even more diversity, or
so it would seem. African Americans maintained many options in some areas, and in other areas they found themselves essentially lumped together with the poor whites. Bearing these realities, and
the diverse nature of the historical subject, in mind we present the following paper which examines the position of the African American in the Gilded Age. In the presentation we
will argue that the predominance of the Victorian Culture helped to shape racial relations that still exist today. The African American and the Gilded Age Interestingly enough, during
the Gilded Age, with many of the predominant figures still remaining in the Victorian culture, we find that a powerfully diverse society was emerging following the Civil War. Communities were
