revealed through many historic testaments which are valuable for remembering the lives of Diaspora Africans since their arrival. New York was originally called Nieuw Haarlem, and was established by
the Dutch in 1658, after they took control from the Native Americans (Soul of America, 2002). One such testament is the New
York City African Burial Ground (Frohne, 2002). This was uncovered in 1991 as construction began on a government office building (Frohne, 2002). Indeed this has become a representation
of the Africans which first came to this country and were literally erased (Frohne, 2002). It has been believed by many that the slave trade did not extend north
and certainly not into New York (Frohne, 2002). However, the discovery of this burial ground is a stark contradiction to that belief (Frohne, 2002). This burial ground was
used from 1712 until 1790 by both free and slave Africans, and contained up to 20,000 bodies (Frohne, 2002). Other
notable New York landmarks include the Mother Zion AME Church and the Abyssinian Baptist Church. The Mother Zion Church was founded in 1796 and also served as an Underground
Railroad Station (Soul of America, 2002). The Abyssinian Baptist Church was founded in 1808 as a result of segregation in a white Baptist church (Soul of America, 2002).
This church is still in use in New York and remains the oldest African American church (Soul of America, 2002).
