of all types find the African American experience fascinating. The following paper addresses some of the issues involved with the African American experience, as they come in the form of
questions presented by the student. The text used for this essay was faxed by the student. One reference is titled "The Literature of Slavery and Freedom 1746-1865" and the other
"Martin Luther King Jr.," which presents his speech "I Have a Dream." Question 1 The student asks, what was/ is one of the most enduring themes in African
American Literature? why? According to the text the primary themes are the resistance to human tyranny and the dedication to human dignity. In these we see that the primary themes
are those that speak of the human spirit, not of race. The text also argues that one of the primary ways in which African American literature would do this is
through Christian ideals and messages. Interestingly enough, the African Americans would often neglect their own heritage in adopting the Christian heritage. And, they would use that Christian heritage to fight
for acceptance and to fight for their own dignity and pride. In terms of why they approached literature and life in this way, we find that it is likely
due to the fact that it was the only thing they were allowed, Christianity, as slaves. They came to this nation as a people of many different religions. They were,
for the most part, incredibly religious people and they could easily relate to the struggles of Jesus, as they were enslaved, and use that religion to find peace within themselves
