Roman epic and often involved a man who could do not wrong, or not enough wrong to really be seen as a villain. He was often a hero who was
stronger than other men, more noble than other men, and a man whom others could envision as a hero that reflected their own ideals and perspectives. Such is the character
of Aeneas in the Aeneid. And, as is often the case in such epics, there is one who the hero has to ultimately destroy. In the Aeneid that character is
Turnus. The following paper compares and contrasts the two characters. Aeneas and Turnus The story of the Aeneid is one that involves Aeneas as he flees from the
destroyed city of Troy. His mission is righteous as he embarks on trying to keep his family somewhat in tact, and he proves over and over that he is a
noble and heroic man, even going into the depths of hell and finding some truth to his own destiny. He is, however, truly the typical hero of the ancient epics.
He is strong, determined, apparently righteous, and always victorious. There is no room for failure, or real failure, in the classic hero. We do not meet Turnus until later
in the story when Aeneas has arrived in the realm of Turnus. Turnus was engaged to marry a woman but the womans mother has chosen Aeneas when she meets him.
This creates the controversy, or conflict that will involve the two men battling against one another, with Aeneas being the more experienced and powerful. In truth, it would not do
to have Aeneas look to be worth less than Turnus since Aeneas is the hero of the story. As such we see Turnus as younger, less experienced, less noble, and
