even today, is somewhat controversial in its language and general plot. The following paper provides an overview of the book, discussing setting, introduction, plot and climax. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn The setting of this novel is during the 19th century in Missouri, in various parts that exist along the Mississippi River. It takes place during a time when slavery was legal and during a time when religion was very powerful in the lives of most people. This story begins with Huck living with older women who are going to civilize him. They make him wear nice clothing, go to school, and learn about religion as well. They are essentially trying to civilize a young boy who is from the wrong side of the tracks, a boy whose father is a drunk who is never around. If anyone has read Twains "Tom Sawyer" they will know that Huckleberry is essentially a wild boy who is fun and entertaining. In this story it begins with him in a position where he is going to be civilized. But he will not be happy with this and will set out, escaping from the civilization forced upon him. Huck fakes his own death and thus is able to make an escape from his civilized life. The plot, other than Huck running away, involved Huck running and coming in contact with Jim, a slave he knows, who is also running away. They have known each other as acquaintances for some time and now they are steadfast friends who must trust one another and rely on one another for survival. They come upon many different adventures as they hide out and make their way down the Mississippi on a raft. They become fast friends and Huck is clearly torn between societys rules about ...
