too many years ago if an individual was to eat he or she did so as the direct result of their own labor or the labor of a close family
member or associate. Because an individual familys livelihood often depended on a relatively small piece of land there was an inherent interest in ecological stability. We inherently recognized
that our crops wouldnt grow well if we abused their soil, their water supply, or the various organisms that were so critical to their perpetuation. This was, whether by
necessity or by design, organic farming. Organic farming has, of course, become more advanced in recent years but the basic premises are the same as they were in these
earlier agricultural practices. The purpose of this paper is to argue that organic farming has many benefits even in todays world. Unfortunately,
in recent years we have moved away from the first person interests that once insured a level of protection for our environment. Big agriculture is designed so that it
doesnt depend on ecological balance. This is primarily due to the fact that a number of technological innovations have made their way into the heart of farming in the
last few decades and have become the norm there. These include everything from the use of genetically engineered plants to the control of pests and disease. Specific areas
of farming now entail a number of technological considerations which were only a figment of science fiction just a few years ago. Many of these innovations have resulted in
the ever increasing pressure to feed the worlds masses and to provide certain products which are of pharmaceutical or industrial use.
