bring people together who have different skills and abilities, group members may compliment each other. The ability of a group to come together and maximise their skills the same way
a company may maximise resources is an advantage. Jobs can be undertaken simultaneously by different members of the group at the same time as allowance for specialisation. There are many
critics that have argued the key to developing products and innovation being transformed into a marketable product or service good integration and cross department team being present (Flemming and Koppleman,
1996, Handy, 1997). The ideas of Charles Handy, with ideas such as network organisation and the cloverleaf structured organisation, are all organisation as dynamic teams and group work, not as
a bureaucratic hierarchy. To consider the advantage of a group we can consider a simple example, such as the manufacture of a chair, and how this has changed over
time. In the days prior to the industrial revolution development of a product would have been by a single person, from start to finish, this was the age of the
craftsmen. However, with scientific management and increasingly complex tasks, even those skilled have become more specialised. This meant a skilled craftsman may still design the chair, but the task would
be broken down to component parts, and a group of people would make the chair, each by performing a small simple task, and passing the chair onto the next person.
