layer (2003). The first layer is responsible for the direction of "host-to-host communication" that exists between hardware in respect to different hosts (2003). The highest layer generally consists of application
programs and each layer utilizes the layer underneath it in order to function (2003). It is rather a simple design. Each layer is dependent on the one before it. It
is also quite logical. Before delving into the models themselves, it is important to understand the concept of the protocol. Protocols are really just a set of formal rules
and when used in the computer programming field, refers to the way in which data is transmitted, particularly when one is sending information across networks ("Protocol," 2003). Low level
protocols are able to define the electrical and physical standards and this is accomplished in respect to bit- and byte-ordering as well as the transmission and error detection and
correction of a bit stream (2003). High level protocols are of course related to data formatting, and this is something that includes the syntax of messages, the terminal to
computer dialogue, and the sequencing of messages and character sets (2003). The rules utilized are merely ones that allow different computers to communicate with one another (Morse, 1996). Protocols
actually describe how packets of information are sent from one computer to another and are how they are broken down for the trip and how they are able to be
reassembled at the receiving end (Morse, 1996). TCP/IP is one example of a protocol. It is the one international language that is spoken by computers on the Internet (1996).
