entertainment industry as a noncriminal deviant sub-culture with reference to the sociological theories of Erving Goffman. Discussion Sociology is the study of human societies; crudely put, it can be considered
the study of group behavior. When linked to social deviance, we immediately run into some interesting observations. For instance, when a professional exotic dancer strips her clothes off in a
club, its not only perfectly all right, its entertainment. But when a drunk exposes himself in public, its disgusting and in fact, a criminal act. Why does society hold two
such wildly conflicting views of human nudity? Why are there differing standards of behavior for men and women? And why does there seem to be a definite component here of
location; that is, within the venue of a nightclub, nudity is acceptable; on the streets, it is condemned. There are, of course, no easy answers to these questions, but
we can make some guesses. Womens bodies have, over the centuries, come to be objects of veneration; numerous works of art celebrate female nudity. Mens bodies, by contrast, are almost
never shown nude; if they are, they are usually exaggerated into a "heroic" style. Feminists would argue that this is a way to keep women in their place: by making
them dolls and convincing them that men worship them, they are easier to control-there may be some truth in that. Its also true that the people with the power dont
have to put up with the same nonsense as the powerless, so, since men have the power in our society, they are not the ones being forced to undress so
