difficulty maintaining accurate maps. Map and record accuracy impact Verizons wireless navigating program for instance, but mapping is also related to billing. Many things can go awry if mapping is
inconsistent. Verizon maintains the accuracy of their maps and records by, for the most part, using subcontractors. For example, all telephone companies use map data from Navteq Corporation (Nakshima, 2007).
Of course, there are concerns about incorrect data. Whether or not Verizon uses a subcontractor, the concerns are there. Mary Beth Lowell of TeleNav has addressed the concerns about either
incorrect or missing data (Nakshima, 2007). She explains that the firm is working with more providers to help keep the records up to date (Nakshima, 2007). Hence, it is TeleNav
that helps to prevent inaccuracies, at least in the mapping software. In essence, companies are scrambling to update data, but again, Verizon relies on companies that do nothing but update
maps. To some extent, this alleviates pressure on Verizon specifically. When it comes to underground and overhead utilities and the accuracy of mapping, there are areas where signals are
weak. Some companies resolve this problem by providing antennas to areas that go beyond their hot spots (Gunderson, 2005). While it is difficult to secure percentages in respect to accurate
versus inaccurate mapping, by and large, the mapping is precise. There are times when there will be glitches, but the subcontractor seems to be doing a relatively good job. Of
course, while perhaps statistics are not available to precisely pinpoint Verizons accuracy rate at a given point in time, there have been problems, and these have led to tragedies. These
are the things that people remember. A motorcycle crash victim called 911 for help, two times, but passed away in a cornfield long before help arrived (Madhani & Starks,
