SA123hom.rtf The subject of homeschool versus public school, or even private school, has always been heated. Critics of homeschooling contend that the children are not properly socialized and will not be as competent as those who are taught in schools that are designed to prepare children for college and career. Homeschoolers disagree, explaining that they do in fact provide a proper education for their children, despite the fact that they use alternative curricula and methods. It does not take rocket science to prove that homeschooling is more conducive to academic achievement. There is a great deal of evidence. The numbers do not lie. In defending homeschooling, Samuel L. Blumenfeld said in a speech: "Did you know that homeschoolers learn better than public schoolers? Wherever homeschoolers have taken standardized achievement tests, theyve come out ahead of the public schoolers. Why? Because the home is a better place to learn than a school" (Blumenfeld 763). Many others concur with his view and the statistics do provide support. Anecdotal evidence also seems to give support for the idea that homeschooling is a superior way to educate children. Many have heard stories of youngsters who are high achievers-opening businesses, winning contests, obtaining perfect SAT scores-and these seem to be more frequent as time goes on. One example is Tyler Petty who in 1997 represented Kosciusko County in the regional spelling bee; he was a homeschool student ("Petty" PG).
