of this story is the abuse to which Tess, the main character, is subjected. Interestingly, although the abuse is different dependant upon the source, still each is devastating in its particular way, and each has a profound impact upon Tess. It is Alec and Angel that will become prominent figures in her life, and it is at their hands that she will suffer. In this way, Hardy relates a number of important messages, about the industrialization of society, the plight of farm workers, the inequality of women in society, and much more. Tess becomes acquainted with Alec when her family learns of a possible familial link between their own family and that of Alecs, the wealthy and powerful DUbervilles. It was rather ironic that a clergyman just happened to tell Tess father about the connection, since he was telling it just as a matter of ironic interest. And yet, the effect was startling upon Tess father, who saw an evident opportunity in the news. "Daze my eyes and isnt there?" Said Durbeyfield. "And here I have been knocking about, year after year, from pillar to post, as if I was no more than the commonest feller in the parish... and how long hev this news about me been knowed, Pason Tringham?" (Hardy, 1992, p. 2). It is Tess that is sent to claim their kinship, and once having arrived, Alec wastes no time in seducing her. Despite his efforts at seduction, Tess tells him specifically she does not love him, and still he forces himself upon her, both figuratively and literally, which serves to victimize Tess. She becomes pregnant from Alec, although the baby dies shortly ...
