that any attempt to do so will ultimately fail. The following discussion will focus on what is meant by the Absurd by focusing on the work of Albert Camus. Human
beings appear to have an innate desire to long for some sense of meaning and cohesiveness in life, but this longing seldom finds concrete evidence within the course of normal
everyday life. This discrepancy is referred to as "the Absurd," which Camus, in the "Myth of Sisyphus," defined as the "divorce between the mind that desires and the world that
disappoints, (the) nostalgia for unity, this fragmented universe and the contradiction that binds them together" (White, 2006, p. 554). Also in the "Myth of Sisyphus," Camus wrote, "The Absurd is
born of this confrontation between the human need and the unreasonable silence of the world" (Levy, 2005, p. 107). Some people cope with this disparity by turning to organized
religion and belief in divine providence. This view sees life has having a definite meaning that is fully understood by an all-powerful deity, but is unclear to human beings due
to the limitations of human understanding. Other people utilize logic to rationalize the elements of life that strike them as absurd, but Camus, Kafka and other authors, such as
philosophers and playwrights, addressed themselves to the reality of the absurdity of life and argued that that its reality should be examined honestly and frankly in order to start to
construct meaning (White, 2006). Camus, as did others who supported this philosophy, felt that the main struggle in life was coming to terms with the reality of the absurd, which
