(2005) provides a Webster/Merriam definition of smart as: "characterized by sharp quick thought; bright." Though this captures some elements of the abstract trait defined by the word smart
not present in the word intelligent, there are other elements that must be integrated into an understanding of this concept. Perhaps the best way to understand the abstract concept
defined by the word smart is to look at a few examples of situations in which the word smart might be applied, and why the word fits in some situations
more than in others. Examples of individuals described as smart might provide a basis for better understanding this term. "John" is an avid reader, a CNN watcher, and a
talented tactician. John is able to read and write in three languages and is a self-directed learner, gobbling up information at incredible rates. John has been tested and
has an intelligence quotient (I.Q.) of 165 and has been invited to join the organization MENSA. Johns mother describes John as "smart," but will go on to add additional
descriptors, including brilliant, schooled and well-read. John, though, has some difficulties. John is unable to drive a car, because his very concrete mind requires that he look at
his feet and hands when he uses them. John still lives at home with his mother, and has never been successful at completing self-care skills. John often does
not bathe, does not do his own laundry and does not know how to cook. Johns mother takes care of most of his basic needs. John also has few
interpersonal skills. His mother says he is very conversational at home, but is unable to hold conversations with people he does not know. When confronted by individuals he
