rights (Lugosi, 2005). Prior to this, abortion was a state regulated procedure. Still, the nation is divided. There are religious people who believe that life begins at conception, and even
atheists may agree that human life does start when egg meets sperm. Still, the debate about abortion is heated. Marquis (2006) explains that many people do believe that determining whether
or not life begins at conception will resolve the argument. That is, many who oppose legal abortion believe that life begins at conception and those who take the opposite stance
claim that it is not known when life begins (Marquis, 2006). It is hard to argue as to when human life begins because when the zygote is present, it is
merely just a cluster of cells with no consciousness. Yes, it is potentially a human being. Also, to take things a step further, the Catholic Church for example does not
believe in birth control because of the potential for human life. In both instances, there is a potential for a human being. Yet, those who are not religious do not
often see the cluster of cells as a human being. Marquis (2006) highlights a few points: "It has been my experience that - with rare exceptions - even those who
insist that the issue of abortion should focus on the interests of pregnant women believe that this focus is warranted because fetuses are either not yet fully alive or not
yet fully human" (Marquis, 2006, p.16). Some theorists believe that human life begins at conception, but others disagree, citing the example that the zygote can further divide to create identical
twins (Kaveny, 2006). In other words, if human life began at conception then there could be no further changes such as the development of more than one person.
