could have abortions, but by the time 1900 rolled around, many states had laws against the procedure (Lewis, 2009). By 1965, abortion was prohibited but a few exceptions remained on
the books (Lewis, 2009). In 1973, the case of Roe v. Wade made the procedure legal for all women in the United States (Lewis, 2009). The fact that one case
turned things around through the system of checks and balances is an example of the beauty of the American system of governance. In effect, no one branch of government
becomes too powerful. The braches are equated with the following titles: legislative, executive and judicial. The balance that is associated with the branches is why it is referred to a
system of checks and balances. That is, each branch is responsible for the completion of certain tasks but one branch is always accountable to another, at least to an extent.
For instance, Congress passes laws but the president has veto power. Thus, Congress cannot become too powerful because the executive branch is watching. Another example is that the judiciary can
create case law which countermands a statute. Roe v. Wade is an example of that and is why abortion is now legal. The Supreme Court case allowed for the setting
of a precedence and it would become unconstitutional for a state to make a law that prohibits abortion. The abortion debate encounters many arguments but they are, for the
most part, based on religion and philosophy. Some thinkers believe that human life begins at conception, but others disagree, citing the example that the zygote can further divide to create
identical twins (Kaveny, 2006). In other words, if human life began at conception then there would be no further changes. That is, if the human life they deem a human
