did anything to help him. A man named Abner Louima was allegedly assaulted in a Brooklyn precinct, and the handle of a toilet plunger inserted into his rectum, thus tearing
his intestines and puncturing his bladder (Johnson & Ritter, 1997). The story did not stay behind the blue wall of silence for long and people rushed to judgment. There
was nothing else on talk radio, and eventually, after the officers were tried by the media, it would come out that largely one rogue officer was responsible for it all.
Of course, a few others were nearby, possibly in the bathroom, possibly even holding Louima down. Details are sketchy which is what all the trials were about. Yes, it would
take more than one trial to try all four officers. Some semblance of truth has been uncovered since. Still, it is hard to say what the roles of the three
additional officers were in this case that shocked the nation. It was on May 4, 1999 that the first trial of the Abner Louima case would
commence (Bickel, 2002). On May 25, Volpe would plead guilty (2002). Volpe of course, was the primary officer who had tortured the Haitian immigrant. The next day, attorneys for
the other two officers on trial who supposedly watched or allowed it to happen, asked for a mistrial but that request was refused (2002). On June 8, one of the
other policemen on trail were found guilty, while all the others were found not guilty (2002). There had been a lot of protest about this verdict as Schwarz maintains his
innocence. His wife had come to his aid, as did many other supporters in trying to convince the court and the public of his innocence. On June 10, even Volpe
