Stress can have a varied impact on families, their cohesiveness, and their resiliency. Stress, of course, can come in a variety of forms. In the late
1940s Reuben Hill investigated stress and its impact on families as it resulted in response to men being separated from their families because they were called away to fight in
World War II. Hill found that some families adjusted well to this stress. Other families, however, fell apart or exhibited other adverse impacts relating to the separation.
Hill developed the ABCX Model to describe these varied impacts. Hills model is incredibly important in helping medical professionals understand the importance of
stress and family in health. Stress impacts family function and family function is often directly related to physical and mental health. The ABCX Model relates to the question
of why do some individuals function well both within their family unit and outside of it but others do not. Family theory provides a basis for answering this question.
Family function has been a known component of health since the twentieth century. A number of theories have been postulated over time Dr.
Murray Bowen, for example, developed what he titled family systems theory in the 1950s and 1960s. This theory recognizes that individuals are not "autonomous psychological entities" but instead are
