themselves incredibly successful in the world of employment, but at the same time seem to discover that their lives are far removed from any success. They are individuals who find they do not know their families or spouses anymore, people who feel disconnected with themselves, and individuals who are essentially unhappy and ignorant as to why they are so unhappy despite their apparent success. In this we see that the pros of contemporary society, or contemporary paradigms, are positive in terms of being successful from a monetary and social position, but clearly negative in relationship to personal happiness and satisfaction. Covey also examines how much of our focus is reliant on personality ethics which has driven our particular society into a clear state of individualization, for people believe that if they work hard, present themselves as powerful and independent beings, they will be successful in all things. This focus on the individual, on our own personalities and how the world sees us, is a focus that is incredibly damaging to society and to the individual. He discusses how people can be independent, dependent, or interdependent. He indicates that many individuals believe that they must always be independent, but that sort of approach only further intensifies the negative realities associated with individualization, and the feelings of unhappiness within the individual. As such he argues that interdependency, that aspect which involves participation at work and in life, is far more constructive for all aspects of ones life. Character ethics are part of the entire process and they are the most powerful and honestly important elements of ones development.
