country music giants over the years, using styles and techniques stretching back to the great Western wear tailors of the past" (Jones). His work has generally included a great deal
of embroidery and vibrant colors and images that reflect his native home of Mexico (Jones). There is often even "a healthy splash of vintage Hollywood glamour" (Jones). His most recent
endeavor has been the styling and creation of the 50 state jackets, giving each state its own unique look and color and symbolic presentation, while maintaining a similar style of
construction for each one. The following paper briefly examines the jackets overall and then focuses on his Tennessee jacket. 50 State Jackets and Tennessee The series of jackets pays
tribute to each particular state. "Manuel began the project in the mid-1980s as a way of thanking the country he immigrated to 30 years earlier" (Jones). Each jacket has a
basic construction that is bolero jacket and his first jacket was white wool, "his preferred suit material-honoring the state of Tennessee" (Jones). A bolero jacket is relatively simple, and yet
also very clean cut and elegant. It is a jacket that does not come down past the waist and thus is very smooth in its lines. It has a very
subtle, understated collar and thus proves to be the perfect canvas perhaps as there is little tailoring, or not quite the tailoring that would be involved in a full length
