common purpose and the character which inspires confidence" (Maxwell, 1999, 1). There are numerous popular publications on leadership today. One of the more interesting, however is "The 21
Indispensable Qualities of a Leader: Becoming the Person Others Will Want to Follow" by John Maxwell. Maxwell (1999) contends a person has certain qualities that make them more prone
to being a leader than others do. At the same time, however, leadership qualities can be developed. Unfortunately, while Maxwells book provides enough insight on leadership to illustrate
this contention, his guidance on doing so is somewhat limited. Maxwell (1999) provides what appears to be an in-depth examination of the traits
or qualities that go hand in hand with leadership. He even goes so far as to list what he calls the most indispensable of these qualities. These are:
character, charisma, commitment, communication, competence, courage, discernment, focus, generosity, initiative, listening, passion, positive attitude, problem-solving, relationships, responsibility, security, self-discipline, servanthood, teachability, and vision. The problem that immediately presents
itself, as might be expected, is that many of these concepts are less than self-explanatory. Indeed, several are not only complex but even abstract. How then can we
work on improving our shortcomings and developing the best leadership style possible? Admittedly, some of the qualities that Maxwell lists are not immediately
understandable to the novice reader. An immediate question that might come to mind, for example, is "what is "vision"? How does "vision" relate to leadership? Maxwell does
