originally became acquainted with the November, 1959 murders of Kansas farmer Harold Clutter, his wife, and children, as the result of an article he was writing about the impact of
the brutal killings on the small-town residents of Holcomb. But the more Capote researched the lives of the killers - criminal drifters Perry Smith and Richard "Dick" Hickock -
the more perversely fascinated by the clash between the morally upstanding Clutters and the completely amoral and depraved duo that snuffed out their lives as if they would be snuffing
out their beloved Pall Mall cigarettes. However, Capote could not have envisioned that the project he devoted every inch of his talent and creative imagination to would occupy the
next six years of his life. For In Cold Blood would remain a story without an ending until the hanging executions of Smith and Hickock, which were delayed by
numerous stays until 1965. It is the authors all-consuming struggle to create art from life that forms the basis for the 2005 film (directed by Bennett Miller and screenplay
written by Dan Futterman based largely on Gerald Clarkes biography), Capote. While Capotes compelling narrative modulates and builds the suspense level in the nonfiction novel, he appears nowhere in the
text, despite the fact that all of the information contained within is based on his own painstaking research and interviews with the convicted murders, their acquaintances, and the law enforcement
personnel that worked on the case. There is only a brief mention at the conclusion of Hickock sharing some last thoughts with "a journalist with whom he corresponded and
who was periodically allowed to visit him" (Capote 371). However, Capote is front and center throughout the film, and it is what takes place after Smith and Hickocks capture
