scrambled to get out and while some made it, many died. Reports of people escaping the disaster alive went to stories of people miraculously holding on to trees for about
eight hours or so. Some were able to run far enough to get away. Many could not. As a result, there are a myriad of health concern as well as
economic problems. The Tsunami took a toll on many communities in the region, and many of those were poor to begin with. In general, health care is scant in the
area and disease tends to breed in standing water. Many people live in poverty and the tsunami also his a very large land area. There were many concerns about the
clean up effort that would take place in a variety of countries. Thailand and South Asia for example would have to be rebuilt after the disaster as tourism at
beach resorts had gone down significantly (Mydans, 2005). This is a rather obvious short term effect of this large wave swooping down on tourist communities. Tourism after the tsunami waned
but it did not have a long-term effect in terms of bookings (2005). People who plan ahead realize that things will be taken care of, and so, the economic
effects were only temporary. The post-tsunami relief effort had included attention to communicable diseases as well as on providing psychosocial support (Stephenson, 2005). In fact, the provision of mental health
services is seen as very important (2005). There were reported cases of food poisoning, tetanus, cholera, and measles (2005). Through immediate action, major epidemics have been thwarted (2005) .
Part of the problem is that the caste system would be problematic. Reports regarding the Untouchables or Dalits who had been homeless due to the disaster were rampant
