The railroad was growing powerful and accessible in the United States and the nation was more firmly established than it had been in the 18th century. Society was growing and so were the needs of society. In light of these changes the nation saw a great emergence of many different types of buildings, many of which were very public. The following paper examines 19th century buildings. The 19th Century Buildings As noted in the introduction, the railroad became a very powerful form of transportation in the 19th century. People found themselves capable of moving across great distances in the United States through the use of the railroads and it was also something that enabled military necessities to be transported more rapidly during the Civil War. As such there was perhaps a great need of railway stations, as more and more people used this form of transportation. They were likely stations that suited the needs of the wealthy during this age which is often referred, in part, to as the Gilded Age, an age of decadence. While many people who were presumably less than wealthy used the railroads, the stations were likely geared towards the wealthy and powerful as could be inferred through looking at some of the stations. The 19th century was also a time that saw the emergence of department stores. They were, in essence, grand versions of country dry good stores that had been a part of the culture for many decades.
