A 5 page paper discussing the various conditions that surrounded the 1992 Israeli elections. These elections occurred during a time when major changes had recently occurred in regards to world powers. Russian Communism had crumbled and the Cold War was essentially in the past. The political parties involved were the Labour Party and the Likuds. The leaders were, respectively, Rabin and Shamir. Rabin won by a slight margin. Election numbers are included herein. at hand. "It was considered by most observers that the results of the elections would have a definite bearing on the likelihood of such a settlement. It has also been
repeatedly pointed out that Israel is an actor in one of the most enduring conflicts in the world and that major events concerning Israel affect the rest of the region,
if not the rest of the world" (Stellman, 1993; p. 121). It has also been said that the many complexities involved in Israels political system, and the rate at which
the changes take place, required very constant and detailed attention for an adequate understanding of unfolding events. Just before the elections the essential issues could easily be divided into
two separate groups: "foreign affairs and domestic issues, with the conflict with the Palestinians and the Arab states spanning the two categories" (Stellman, 1993; p. 121). The fall of Communism,
the end of the Cold War, and the falling of the Iron Curtain had resulted in a new balance of power. There had been a major shift in alliances due
to these conditions as well as a general reappraisal of the influence of these powers and nations. "The effect on the Arab-Israel conflict of past superpower confrontation had been a
continuation of US--USSR antagonism by proxy: each superpower aiming at increasing its global power by supporting or encouraging advances made by its regional allies at the expense of the other
side" (Stellman, 1993; p. 121). But with the end of the Cold War what was once the domain or concern of the USSR dramatically mellowed its prominence with the dependent
