general. While other factors certainly played a part in President Bushs defeat, the presence of Ross Perot in this election certainly made his task much more difficult, and it can
be argued that his presence cost Bush the election. A number of factors had a clear influence on the outcome of the 1992 election for the U.S. presidency. Naturally,
the kind of campaign which each candidate ran played a part as did the characteristics and personalities of the individual candidates. In this particular election, the economic conditions in the
country were also an important factor. Nevertheless, as a third party candidate, Perots presence certainly appears to have been the deciding factor. Perot support was running between 25
and 30% in most pools before he pulled out of the race in June (Lipset 7). Some polls even placed him in the lead while others had him in the
number two spot. Clinton was running third in most of the polls taken at that time. There is a precedent in American history for a third party candidate totally upsetting
the traditional scheme of things. In 1912, the Republican nominee William Howard Taft came in third behind Woodrow Wilson and Teddy Roosevelt (Lipset 7). The ?Reagan Democrats? When Perot
announced his initial withdrawal, two-thirds of his backing went to Clinton (Lipset 7). Many of the people who supported Perot voted Republican in the previous elections either for Reagan
or Bush. These ?Reagan Democratswere fed up with the economy and President Bushs seeming ineptness in dealing with it, and they shifted to Perot early in the spring. It
was easy for these people to endorse Perot. He conveyed an image as a successful businessman, a billionaire, and this assured the voters that he would be able
