The Civil Rights Movement and the strong sentiment which existed in the 1960s and 1970s regard to American involvement in Vietnam had a phenomenal impact on
society. The impact on law enforcement, although not often considered, was in actuality quite significant in itself. Society had apparently taken a radical turn and law enforcement felt
the need to take the steps necessary to keep up with that turn. Not only was law enforcement faced with having to deal with long haired students who were intent
on burning their draft cards and in protesting the war in even more dramatic and potentially threatening ways, it had to deal with the various factions of society who were
just beginning to realize that they had certain rights and were just beginning to have the will to stand up for those rights.
In the 1960s and 1970s numerous provisions that had been put into place in previous years of the countrys history were just beginning to require serious efforts at enforcement.
The rights granted to citizens for free assembly, for example, came to the forefront as one group after another protested one problem or another. As people began to question
the integrity of their own government during this time period the propensity for possession of such contraband as illegal drugs began to escalate. Consequently law enforcement had to not
only conduct more frequent searches but also to make more frequent arrests not only for drug possession but for a variety of other activities which seemed to intensify in this
time period. We began as a society to place more value in the Fourteenth Amendments provisions that we shall not be deprived, in the words of the Amendment itself,:
