50 millions deaths; the number is uncertain because of the scale of the catastrophe. This paper discusses the Spanish Flu with regard to what else was happening at the time;
why the death toll was so large; and why world leaders tried to hide the epidemic. Discussion The Spanish Flu was a "pandemic," meaning an outbreak that is spread across
a huge geographical region, in this case the entire world. Its not particularly reassuring to find out that recent outbreaks of the flu, "including drifted H1N1 viruses and reassorted H2N2
and H3N2 viruses" are actually "composed of key genes from the 1918 virus, updated by subsequently incorporated avian influenza genes that code for novel surface proteins, making the 1918 virus
indeed the mother of all pandemics" (Taubenberger & Morens, 2006). What else was going on at the time: At the time the flu broke out, the world was just coming
out of the horrors of the First World War. The Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918; the outbreak of the flu coincided almost exactly with the end of the
war (The deadly virus). The end of the war also meant that Europe was in ruins, the German economy was shattered and inflation was running wild, and after the stress
