celebrated in this country since the early seventeenth century and the first iconic gatherings between Native Americans and the Europeans that had actually invaded their lands. The dishes that
are served on this day are representative largely of the Native American cultures that helped the first European arrivals here to survive. There is little, in fact, to identify
this annual meal with the largely European peoples that now celebrate it. Ironically, however, the way that this event is celebrated or not by the cultural groups in question
is very different. To understand why this is the case it is necessary to consider the history itself. History reveals the reason that Thanksgiving was and is such
an important symbolic event in American culture. It also reveals the way that symbolism is interpreted differently by different American cultures. Despite
the potential for hostility between the Native American groups and the European peoples that gathered together on on the first Thanksgiving celebrations, the first celebrations of Thanksgiving were representations of
trust and support. The event was a harvest celebration, a type of event that was customarily celebrated not just in the old world but also in the so-called "New
