their leisure time, at their jobs, or inside their homes. Distance communication was restricted to telephones and physical letters. With the widespread adoption of information technologies and the internet, however,
people now have the opportunity to communicate with a much extended sphere of individuals, through media such as email and website forums. Moreover, the nature of existing communication technologies has
also changed radically, as interpersonal communications with those individuals which one knows in real life can now take place not only through face to face interactions and telephone, but also
through written email communication, social media websites, and most recently, texting. This paper will explore the manner in which the rise of text messaging has influenced society at the individual
level, with a focus on the impact on communication and literacy. This paragraph helps the student provide an overview of texting and literacy. Concerns about texting and literacy are
quite pervasive. A 2011 study looked at the impact which a heavy use of texting technology had upon traditional literacy skills. One drawback the study noted was that "although oral
reading fluency is a commonly used measure of proficiency [in literacy], few measures of digital communicative practices exist" (Ortlieb, 2011). In other words, there is a real need for those
seeking to understand the impact which texting has had upon communication to account for alternative measurements of literacy that may differ from traditional studies. As such, the 2011 study "centers
