major differences do exist between them. While both the textile and apparel industries create the production and distribution that provide consumers with clothes and other products, they each have
different roles. The textile industry is actually the first link in the chain, being responsible for making yarn, thread and fabric. They also, however, manufacture carpet, auto upholstery,
twines and cords. Some of the processes used in the industry include yarn spinning, weaving, knitting, tufting and even nonwoven production. "...There have been many developments, most of
them based on genetic engineering techniques, for improving the quality, consistency and economics of fibre production and, in the longer term, modifying the performance characteristics of the fibres themselves" (Byrne
343). The apparel industry, on the other hand, represents the needles and scissors component of the sewn products sector, with the primary function of this industry that of taking
the products manufactured by the textile industry and cutting and assembling the pieces into finished goods for the retail market (Mittelhauser 18) The
textile industry has been able to maintain production levels and increase them in some areas. However, at the same time they have been decreasing the number of employees in
the industry. This has been done primarily through increasing labor productivity by increasing the amount each worker is able to produce at a given time. Through automation and
the restructuring of work processes, this productivity has been increased as well as by employing more skilled people overall. The computer technology has also helped, but in some cases
