by Tenniel, whom Carroll asked to work on the book; the second is a much more modern version: a 2001 edition with illustrations by DeLoss McGraw. Discussion In the
first chapter, Alice sees the White Rabbit, chases him, and falls down the Rabbit Hole to Wonderland. She sees a beautiful garden through the keyhole of a tiny door but
is too big to fit through it. She found a bottle labeled "DRINK ME," which she did, and shrank until she was only ten inches in height, but shed left
the key on the table and couldnt reach it. She found a cake that said "EAT ME" and decided to do so, in the hope that she would grow enough
to reach the key so she could get into the garden. This is where the chapter ends. Working with Tenniel first, it appears that he took the story very literally.
Where Carroll described a rabbit in a waistcoat with a pocket watch that is precisely what Tenniel drew. There appear to be four illustrations in the first chapter: the rabbit
with the watch, Alice finding the door, Alice looking after the rabbit as he scurries down the hallway, and Alice getting ready to eat the cake. In each of Tenniels
drawings, he is simply drawing what Carroll has written. The illustrations work to support the text and give us a visual representation of the action. Tenniel appears not to have
"interpreted" Carrolls text in any way; instead, he has simply reproduced it in pictures. DeLoss McGraw is a contemporary artist who works in watercolor. He has done eight illustrations
