to the Texas State Library & Archives Commission, "the story of Texas itself, and the states rise from an isolated frontier to a major economic power." In the middle of
the 1800s, prior to the Civil War, the first operating railway was the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, & Colorado (Texas State Library & Archives Commission). It was not only the first
railroad in Texas, but only the second railroad that existed west of the Mississippi River (Texas State Library & Archives Commission). This particular railroad was responsible for conveying freight and
passengers from Harrisburg to Stafford, and back, a stretch of approximately 20 miles (Texas State Library & Archives Commission). "By the end of 1861, there were about 470 miles of
