an automatic guarantee of having to serve on any jury, however, inasmuch as there is a prescreening and selection process each person must go through before being chosen. Once
picked to continue the process - which may last part day or full day - several dozen prospective jurors gather together with the judge, attorneys and both sides of the
respective case. Voir dire (speaking the truth) is conducted for the benefit of judge and attorneys to question each person. Similar or even exact questions from the feedback
form filled out earlier may be asked as a means by which to coordinate answers and double check respondents are truly eligible as both a fair and impartial juror.
Both sides and their respective attorneys are then permitted to put forth peremptory or for-cause challenges regarding specific jurors. A final jury and up to four alternate jurors are
selected once challenges have been addressed. In order to fulfill their civic duties as jurors, the chosen panel take an oath "by which they swear or affirm to tell
the truth when answering questions about their qualifications as jurors" (Juror Selection). The entire selection process occurs for the single objective of assembling a fair and impartial jury; as such,
questions asked by lawyers of potential jurors may seem irrelevant to the case and even to the overall aspect of serving on a panel, however, they are utilized for the
purpose of drawing out certain responses that gauge that individuals opinions and biases on different topics. The questions can appear inappropriate or embarrassing, yet they are a necessary evil
