justice. It is an organization that is headed by many different board members, all seeking to improve the community of the state of Texas through legal activities. The following paper provides a brief overview of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice. Texas Board of Criminal Justice There is a great deal that the Texas Board of Criminal Justice is involved in and as such the information presented herein will be very general, and provide a basic overview of their activities and focus. We start with their policy statement regarding the media and the informative nature of the organization. The organization states, "As a public agency, the TDCJ shall maintain a position of cooperation and responsiveness in informing the media concerning TDCJ operations and accomplishments" (Texas Department of Criminal Justice [2], 2005). They claim that their actions will also reflect this position and that "News media shall have access to offenders to the extent that such access does not disrupt the safe and secure operation of the unit/facility, impair the rehabilitation of an offender, or detract from the deterrence of crime" (Texas Department of Criminal Justice [2], 2005). This information indicates that they are highly cooperative with the media in terms of offering information to the public, information that is valuable where the safety of the community is concerned. In relationship to the board, there are nine board members who are appointed by the governor. They are appointed with the understanding that they will oversee the department which essentially makes involves supervision, confinement, re-entry and rehabilitation (Texas Board of Criminal Justice [1], 2005).
