other forms of employment. Discrimination based on race or national origin sometimes comes from stereotypical thinking (Curry, 2004). For instance, an employer may not be as likely to promote
employees who are Mexican or African-American (Curry, 2004). They may be prejudiced and believe that those in these minority groups do not have the same intellectual capacity as do White
people (Curry, 2004). Similarly, they may believe that someone who is of Middle Eastern descent is an enemy of America (Curry, 2004). All of these things are equivalent to discrimination
and it is against the law. One case that cropped up is a suit against New York based Texaco. In 1995, Texaco had been taken to task by the
Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs due to its alleged unfair employment practices (White, 1996). The EEOC would conduct an investigation about these allegations and discovered that there is reasonable
cause and that it seems that Texaco did discriminate against black employees in certain salary niches due solely to their race (White, 1996). These types of findings are more relevant
when it comes to the racial climate in respect to Texaco (White, 1996). White (1996) also mentions that the taping of the N word by executives -- an incident that
made the news at the time--is not as significant as the revelation that the company did not pay African Americans fairly. It is one thing to allow words to come
out at a meeting that are clearly prejudicial. It indicates that some of the individuals have a deep seated prejudice that might merely be a part of their upbringing. It
is another thing to embrace an institutional form of discrimination. In other words, executives may make negative racial comments and that is detrimental, but it is much worse to either
