Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 12 page paper reviewing several types of software testing approaches. The paper discusses unit, integrated, regression and acceptance testing, and also discusses automation. development cycle of any product, whether the product is an airplane, a lamp or software, generally is assumed to include testing as the final phase of development. Does the
plane stay in the air? Does the lamp produce light? Does the software work as expected and intended to work? Goldsmith and Graham (2002a) report that most
phases of the development cycle for software have gained increasing attention over the past several years, but that testing often remains relegated to the category of afterthought.
There are several approaches to testing, but Goldsmith and Graham (2002a) note that defined models of testing are far less well known than are development models.
Apparently the reason is that "many testers have gained most of their expertise on the job" (Goldsmith and Graham, 2002a) and have not been trained in specific methods.
Rather, they find what works for them. Further, as of mid-2002, "most formal academic programs ... dont even offer courses on testing" (Goldsmith and Graham, 2002a).
The bottom line is that, though many remain unaware of defined models of testing, several exist. There are variations within those models, increasing the testing
choices available to software developers. Testings Purpose Hutcheson (2003) states that todays testers face conditions that are not as attractive as they were
a few years ago. Many are new to testing, many are experienced testers facing a testers dont get no respect climate that is dominated by ship date pressures" (Hutcheson,
2003 p. 12), in which the tester holds a precarious position. If the product fails to test as well as it should and the tester calls attention to this
