For example, a student who is being tested on multiplication might be confronted with the problem of "What is 5,131,613 x 6,246" and 4 multiple choice answers. One student might take a full minute (or more) and perform the entire calculation, while a "test-taking pro" will observe that because the right-hand operands are 3 and 6, the right hand digit of the correct answer has to be 8. Since only one of the given multiple choice answers has a right-hand digit of 8 that has to be the correct answer. This answer can be discerned in only a few seconds, allowing the student more time to answer other questions (Latham, 2004). The skill involved here is "to look at the answers first and then do just enough work to eliminate the wrong answers" (Latham, 2004), p. 23). In todays educational climate of high-stakes testing, teaching test-taking skills is topic that should be addressed early in the educational process. This is because success at tests is not simply a matter of a student knowing the material and having the skills to take a required test, but it also involves the student having the confidence to do well and test-taking skills offer that confidence, especially in timed-tests, which exert considerable pressure on the students involved. Literature Review Hong, Sas and Sas (2006) conducted a study in order to investigate test-preparation and test-taking strategies that high school students use in algebra tests. Drawing from a sample pool of 156 students, the researchers conducted interviews with 61 students.
