Tesco as the dominant UK supermarket has been one gained as a result of careful strategic planning. The ability to control costs has been a significant factor in the entire operation. It may be argued that where there are so many goods, sold each day, in each store, that the overheads associated with warehousing and distribution need to be kept to a minimum as well as the required for the process to be effective, moving goods into stores quickly and ensuring that the stores have the goods they need to sell. To consider how Tesco have used warehousing and distribution within their company strategy as a way to remain competitive within the food industry it is necessary to look at some concepts that apply to warehousing and distribution and then apply these to Tesco and facilitated their competitive position within the food industry. However when looking at this is should be remembered that Tesco sell a broad range of goods, not only foods, and many of the warehouse and division aspects of the operation are integrated across different departments, with division made according to storage needs, such as ambient, chilled and frozen goods, as well as by pace of movement, such as the fast moving goods. There is a general recognition that the management of supply chains tends to focus on the primary relationships between he company concerned and the direct buyers or suppliers.
