One of the most effective ways in which therapists can help a community get past the ravages of family violence is to reach abused children through play therapy in
order to gain a deeper understanding of their trauma from exposure to intimate violence and effectively guide them out (Hines et al, 2005), not the least of which includes the
presence of sexual abuse within the family unit. The goal of tertiary prevention is to prevent CSA from continuing or recurring. This third level of prevention occurs after
a child has been sexually abused. The goal is to cease the continuation of the abuse and to treat victims by teaching methods of preventing reoccurrence of CSA.
Through tertiary prevention strategies, the damaging effects of CSA may be lessened and sometimes prevented by caring, supportive and open adults or service providers who are able to address the
occurrence of CSA with the victims (McClusky, 2007). Play therapy - "a technique whereby the childs natural means of expression, namely play,
is used as a therapeutic method to assist him/her in coping with emotional stress or trauma" (Anonymous, 2002) - is employed so that the child can be free to express
himself in the natural state of release that children innately understand. Virginia Axline was the first recognize the severe limitations placed upon children who are compelled to express themselves
by way of adult methods, namely by speech alone. The fact that children do not possess a strong command of language during their toddler years creates overwhelming pressure when
