since the instigation of the war in Iraq, the Bush administration has offered the explanation for terrorist attacks against the US by saying that fundamentalist Islam hates the United States
"because we are free" and that America is despised because of its principles, for "what it is" (Eland, 2006, p. 38). This has generated a climate of fear, which the
Bush administration has used to push through Congress various actions, such as "the Patriot Act, massive changes in the legal system, and a dramatic expansion of the US military" presence
in Afghanistan and Iraq (Kellner, 2007, p. 622). This actions not only fail in their efforts to effectively combat terrorism, but they do so by sacrificing the principles by which
Americans define themselves as a people. Furthermore, the Bush administrations foreign policy stance has been dominated by an intense focus on terrorism, which is painted in black-and-white terms--the United States
versus a shadowy Islamic Other, good versus evil, Christianity versus Islam-and the idea that deterrence should consist entirely of strategies of punishment and reprisal, carried out by the military and
the courts. Consider President Bushs assertion that terrorisms main motivation is that they "hate us." Public opinion polls that are taken in Islamic countries have consistently revealed that the people
